The Delivery

The Delivery - Branded Short Film + Commercial

The Delivery is an over-the-top action satire about a man rushing to deliver (pun intended) the news to his wife about their child’s gender. Its a humorous, tongue-in-cheek critique at the rise of more and more ridiculous gender reveal movies online in what used to be a simple, ordinary, no-frills affair. The film stars Erik Valdez, Jonathan Lipnicki, and the late Verne Troyer who sadly passed away a day after filming concluded.

We got brought into the project by Erik who was impressed by our past action and automotive work since he wanted a hybrid of the two. Though comedy wasn’t really our wheelhouse (pun again intended), we worked with Erik to come up with some good moments of levity so the film had high stakes yet still felt fresh and light.

Starring: Erik Valdez, Candice Valdez, Verne Troyer, Jonathan Lipnicki, Chris Mintz-Plasse, Coby Ryan McLaughlin
Directed by: Brian L. Tan “BLT”
Producers: Erik Valdez
Line Producer: Stephen Enloe
Music by: Jordan “Infinity” Suecof
Edited by: John McMinn
Cinematographer: Vic Huber
Steadicam: Ivan Valadez

BTS Video & Coloring/DI: Trevor Hollander
Camera Car: Marshall Chabot
Production Manager: Emily Oeller
Assistant Directors: John McMinn, Chris Wilson

After releasing the film, we were featured on Extra TV as part of Erik and Candice Valdez’s baby announcement. Sadly, a lot of the celebration was overshadow by the untimely death of Verne Troyer and our film was dedicated to him.

Audi Motorsports: Illumination at the Nürburgring

We had the privilege of filming the 24 Hours of Nürburgring for the Audi R8 LMS Cup and made a little video dedicated to the team and the hard work they put in over countless days and nights of hardcore racing. Shot on the Red Epic, we specifically chose anamorphic lenses and Aputure lights to accentuate the cacophony of sights that are a sight to behold at the famous, storied racetrack.

Cheech Marijuana PSA

Behind the Scenes

Cheech Marin + State of California Marijuana legalization - Public Service Announcement

We’re all familiar with the pot-induced antics of Cheech and Chong, so it was an absolute delight getting to film Cheech Marin in a tongue-in-cheeck Public Service Announcement for the State of California, starring the State’s very own Secretary of State, Alex Padilla. Owing to Cheech’s schedule, we only had 2 hours to film the project. However, we made the best of it and were happy that it was not only fun and light hearted but also educational and informative about the sign up process of legally signing up for a Marijuana-based business in the State of California.

Starring: Cheech Marin, Georgina Bekerian, Alex Padilla
Directed by: Brian L. Tan “BLT”
Producers: Jesse Melgar
Edited by: Brian L. Tan “BLT”
Cinematographer: Trevor Hollander
Camera Assistant: James LaFortezza

Not only was our PSA publicized from the official California Secretary of State’s website, but we were also featured on CBS News, NBC, KTLA, the Sacramento Bee, and more.

Jo Wrapal Commercial Series

Presenting Jo Wrapal

Jo Wrapal - Commercial Series/Ad campaign

Inspired by heroes we’ve come to know and love like the Dollar Shave Club guy, the Old Spice man and Dos Equis “the Most Interesting Man in the World”, we were inspired to create our own super hero – Jo Wrapal, a smug, self-aware and arguably accurate description of a Hollywood film producer. We created this persona and a slew of 3 accompanying commercials for Wrapal.com, a startup that connected filmmakers to film locations across the country.

Filming in continuous one-takes, our team had to go through a serious level of coordination and multiple takes before we could finally nail the perfect shot. The results were well worth and left us chuckling for more.

Lights, camera… Fire? We were inspired by the very elemental nature of fire and wanted to make it the backdrop of our first music video, “Guillotine” a cover by the renown acapella music video group, M-Pact. Martin Scorsese Canon C300 Spot - Commercial

Imagine getting a call that you’ll be getting to direct one of filmmaking’s most legendary directors for a new Canon Commercial?

We had to pinch ourselves to believe it, but sure enough – we were honored to be able to produce this short but sweet Canon commercial highlighting the launch of the then brand new C300 video camera with none other than Academy Award Winning director Marty Scorsese. Despite having directed hit after hit like Raging Bull, The Departed, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Irishman and more, Scorsese was humble to a fault and a true gentleman to work with.

Fencing in Laikipia

Public Service Announcement + Travel Video

Fencing in Laikipia

Fencing in Laikipia, Kenya
public service announcement + Travel Video

Man and animal have always coexisted peacefully, but because of man’s ever-expanding footprint, human-wildlife conflicts in Laikipia, Kenya have increased. Normally, fences are associated with segregation and separation. But here in Laikipia, fences don’t offend – they defend and this commercial highlights the importance of fences, why they’re needed, what needs to be done to help increase their number throughout Laikipia.

This was one of the most engaging Public Service Announcements (PSAs) + travel videos we’ve ever undertaken here at Long Story Short – Not only did we fly more than 20+ hours to reach our location in Kenya, Africa but had no idea what to expect when we landed. There were a few touch and go moments including being nearly chased out of a Kenyan village, encountering the tracks of some elephant poachers and filming out of a doorless safari airplane for some arial shots, but we wouldn’t have traded it for the world.

One particularly touching moment was getting to meet and hold the last two Northern White Rhinos in existence on the planet. Sobering and sad, we made it a point to feature them prominently in the video as it occurred to us we were one of the last film crews that would ever get to document these now-extinct creatures ever on camera again. Truly unforgettable.

LSTN Headphones: City of Dreams - Commercial

We all know music takes us to a different place mentally, but what if they had the power to take us to a whole different place; literally. This kernel of an idea was the genesis of our commercial for the LSTN Headphone Company.

Shot over a 12 hour period overnight around the city of Los Angeles, we explored the transformative power of music as personified by these amazing headphones and showed how quality audio can take us wherever we want.

U.S. Army Virtual Reality Commercial

Short Film Documentary + Virtual Reality 360 Video

Leaders Made Here

Leaders Made here - U.S. army virtual reality 360 video

Nature vs. nurture, born vs. bred. It’s a debate as old as time. Are leaders born, or are they made? To the United States Army, the former is the case.

Hot on the heels of the Virtual Reality (VR) revolution, we were commissioned by the United States Army Reserve Officer Cadet Training Corps (ROTC) in conjunction with Holor media to produce the U.S. Army’s first ever VR 360 recruitment video. Featuring the cadets of Bruin Battalion out of UCLA, we wanted to give viewers an all-immersive, in-depth experience on what it was like to go through a Field Training Exercise (FTX) over one very long weekend at the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton.

Striving for realism, the crew consisted of film professionals as well as an Army Public Affairs team who did everything the cadets did in order to strive for maximum realism.

Starring: The cadets of Bruin Battalion
Directed by: Brian L. Tan “BLT”
Producers: Frank Ishizaki, Kymber Lim
Edited by: John Peeler
Camera Team: Derek Sherwood, Dae McDonald
VFX Supervisor: Erick Gleiser
Post Production Coordinator: Guillom Hines
Post Production Producer: Matt Olson
Special Thanks: Lt. Colonel Shannon Stambrensky, Victoria Sanelli, UCLA ROTC, Holor Media

Being the Army’s first ever Virtual Reality 360 video targeting millennials and techies who liked the VR space, we were lucky to be featured on We Are the Mighty, as well as a few other military press outlets who praised it’s originality and engaging story while preserving the heart and soul of the cadets and cadre featured.

Behind the Scenes

Harlem Globetrotters in 360 - Virtual Reality Video

The Harlem Globetrotters have come a long way from Harlem, In fact, they have been delighting and thrilling audiences worldwide for decades and when we got the call from Holor Media to film them in their first ever 360 Virtual Reality (VR) video, we were said yes before they could even tell us more. This production was particularly challenging as we had to film while a live show was ongoing, and had zero to no room for error as some of the acts could not be repeated.

One particularly novel moment was when the Globetrotters did their famous ‘magic circle’ ball pass where several basketballs get thrown in a circular motion between several players all at once; requiring a high degree of dedication and attention to detail. We wanted to put our camera in the center of it all, and nearly ended up losing it at one point!
